Pindone
What is rabbit bait? Pindone?
The two common baits are 1080 and Pindone. The former is used on larger properties and very effective - certified experts only should use it!
It is important to note that Pindone is used for rabbit control because the risks are low and the effectiveness is good in comparison to the work required. It is, however, important to use it as instructed on the container. Pindone-treated oats can be bought from rural suppliers but carrots need to be freshly baited and so need to be bought from specialists.
When is Pindone best used?
Pindone can be used in a large single dose (18 mg/kg for rabbits) or repeated smaller doses (0.52 mg/kg/day over 7 days). The smaller doses are more effective. After ingestion of the anticoagulants, there is usually a lag period of 3-5 days before the onset of clinical signs.
The best conditions are when food is scarce and rabbit 'kittens' are old enpigh to get outside the warren. Not all the rabbits will participate unless there is a scarcity of other attractive food. Sometimes not all rabbits It is wise to follow the BLG's rabbit baiting calendar.
When rabbits die, their carcasses should be removed. It is not the case that other animals eating a dead rabbit will also die. Pindone, unlike some rat poisons, does not kill its predators because they cannot eat enough dead rabbits. Vitamin K1 is an antidote available from vets if, by mistake, Pindone is swallowed or a poisoned carcass is eaten by a dog, for instance. Birds of prey are considered to not be at risk because they can't eat enough.
Where is it safe to use Pindone?
Care should be taken when feeding out Pindone.
On larger properties, Pindone is usually spread using a bait layer. Once the grooves are made, the free feeds and baited feeds can be put in them. Pindone oats are coloured to be unattractive to birds.
For people in domestic situations, near pets and children, it is recommended to use a bait 'station'. Bait stations can be as simple as a temporary fence with wire that has holes too small for a dog or cat or child and a feed bowl protected from the rain.
Whatever method is chosen, it is recommended to offer the rabbits a couple of free feeds and then 2 - 4 baited feeds.
Baiting in the same location or nearby should not happen continuously - perhaps once a month at first?
