Blitz Report 2025

The aim of the day was ....

We are questioning how rabbit control tasks are split up. Traditionally, Landcare has ... but we suspect it is better to ...

Baiting is doable on open land but not so easy in peri-urban areas. While the bait used (Pindone) is not going to be in the carcasses of dead rbbits to threaten the lives of animals that eat the carcasses, the baited oats or crrots need to be safe from children and dogs, etc. We are keen to work as many have in Western Australia with baiting stations - somewhere the rabbits can find the bait without risking other things.

There is general agreement that rabbits will not be controlled unless they are excluded from warrens. Warrens can be effectively destroyed by ripping but also implosion. In some cases, it is not possible to use machinery to rip a warren, and sometimes it is better to implode a warren just because that way special plants or locations can be treated and left in a neat as well as a good condition. As every warren and its environs is different, in some cases it might be cheaper and more effective to implode the warrens.

In advance, a team of volunteers was assembled - including an opportunity for people to witness a warren implosion event. The combination of government reps, various association members, Landcare members, local landholders and even distant VRAN representatives meant some of the best knowledge awas a available to participants. But there were no lectures - working with VRAN in particular, we have learnt that shoulder-to-shoulder with someone can be the best position for learning from them, especially if you are both watching experts.
