May 10, 2025 Rabbit Sweep Blitz

The aim of our free blitz was to help neighbours progress rabbit control activity.  We know from experience that working with neighbours is the only way
sometimes and it can be fun! (See pictures below.)

Vicki Strachan managed the event brilliantly with the help of her family and lots of others - thank you everyone!

 We welcomed everyone because:

  • they wanted to join one of the local groups, or
  • they wanted to work with their neighbours to form a group, or even
  • because they are willing to volunteer to help others with their rabbit problem.

We call new rabbit control groups 'cells'. Small groups of landholders were assisted by experts who had clearly defined rabbit control tasks.
Participants could engage and try out some of the relevant processes.

 Things they chose to learn about or perhaps try:

  • identifying and assessing a rabbit problem;
  • habitat removal; rabbit-proof fencing;
  • planning action; details of necessary tasks; engaging experts, and
  • meeting contractors, neighbours and volunteers.

We had experienced people demonstrating the various activities.
Our expertsl invited questions and discussions - no lectures!

Our desire is to have you help someone and to get help from them!

Securing our environment will take a few years so good initiation and maintenance events with neighbours will make a difference.

Implosion images - note that small implosions resulted in the destruction of a huge warren but did not adversely affect the vegetation.

After all the exercises, the group joined a sausage sizzle and chatted in the sunshine. We were on Parks Victoria managed land for our lunch, see image, and had participants from City of Greater Geelong, Victorian Rabbit Action Network, local contractors showing what they could do, are very grateful to the two farmers who helped making land available and work doable.
